Soriška planina is part of the Julian Alps and is located at the edge of the Bohinj mountain range. The Julian Alps are the highest mountain range in Slovenia, and the majority of the surface of the Julian Alps is part of the Triglav National Park. Since 2003, the Julian Alps have been declared a biosphere reserve, which means they receive special protection for their natural resources and biodiversity.
